Mentioned in 7 verses (KJV)
Description
The sycamore fig grew figs directly from its trunk and branches rather than among its leaves, and the tree itself was common enough along Israel’s lowlands to support the humble trade of tending it. Amos described himself as just such a tender of sycamore fruit before God called him to prophesy.
Key verses
“Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet’s son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:”
Amos 7:14
“And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way.”
Luke 19:4
Fun fact
Zacchaeus, a short tax collector desperate to see Jesus over the crowd, climbed a sycamore tree — the same species Amos once tended for its fruit (Luke 19:4).
