Description

The date palm produced one of the most reliable sweeteners of the ancient Near East, and many scholars think the ‘honey’ in the famous description of Canaan as a land flowing with milk and honey refers to thick date syrup rather than honey from bees. A single tree could bear fruit for decades.

Key verses

  • “A land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of oil olive, and honey;”

    Deuteronomy 8:8

Fun fact

The ‘honey’ named among the land’s seven crops (Deuteronomy 8:8) is widely thought to mean date syrup.
