Description
Pulse — a general term for legumes and seeds — was the simple, non-royal fare Daniel and his friends requested rather than defile themselves with the king of Babylon’s meat and wine. Ten days later, they looked ‘fairer and fatter in flesh’ than everyone eating from the palace kitchen.
Key verses
“Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.”
Daniel 1:12
Fun fact
Daniel didn’t ask for a lifetime commitment — he proposed a ten-day trial run on nothing but pulse and water before the guard would even see a difference (Daniel 1:12).
