Description
The gourd that shaded Jonah grew up in a single night beside his makeshift shelter outside Nineveh, then withered just as fast when God sent a worm to destroy it. Jonah’s grief over a plant he never planted became God’s object lesson about compassion for a whole city.
Key verses
“And the LORD God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding glad of the gourd.”
Jonah 4:6
Fun fact
The gourd lived and died within about a day, its whole life span compressed into a single object lesson (Jonah 4:6-10).
