Pottage (stew)
נָזִיד (nazid)
A cooking preparation rather than a specific dish’s ingredients — its cleanness follows what goes into the pot
Would you eat it?
Mentioned in 7 verses (KJV)
Description
Pottage was a simple boiled stew — usually vegetables, lentils, or whatever was on hand — cooked in one pot and ladled out hot. It’s best known as the meal Esau traded his birthright for, but it also nearly poisoned a company of prophets before Elisha made it safe to eat.
Key verses
“And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint:”
Genesis 25:29
“And Elisha came again to Gilgal: and there was a dearth in the land; and the sons of the prophets were sitting before him: and he said unto his servant, Set on the great pot, and seethe pottage for the sons of the prophets.”
2 Kings 4:38
Fun fact
When wild gourds accidentally made a pot of stew toxic, Elisha didn’t throw it out — he tossed in flour and declared it safe to eat (2 Kings 4:38-41).
