Description
The ‘husks’ the prodigal son longed to eat were most likely carob pods, a coarse, leathery food normally fed to pigs rather than people. That he craved even this shows exactly how far his fortune — and his dignity — had fallen.
Key verses
“And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.”
Luke 15:16
Fun fact
Carob pods are still nicknamed ‘St. John’s bread’ in folk tradition, from the idea that they may have been part of John the Baptist’s wilderness diet.
