Description
Saffron came from the delicate stigmas of a crocus flower, thousands of blossoms needed to produce even a small amount, which made it one of the most valuable spices in the ancient world. Solomon lists it among the fragrant luxuries of an idealized garden.
Key verses
“Spikenard and saffron; calamus and cinnamon, with all trees of frankincense; myrrh and aloes, with all the chief spices:”
Song of Solomon 4:14
Fun fact
Saffron remains one of the most expensive spices in the world by weight today, for the same reason it was a luxury in Solomon’s time: each flower yields only a few usable threads.
