Description
The mustard seed was proverbially the smallest seed a farmer would sow, yet it grew into a shrub large enough for birds to nest in its branches. Jesus picked it deliberately as the smallest possible starting point for the biggest possible outcome.
Key verses
“Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field:”
Matthew 13:31
Symbolism
The kingdom of heaven, starting impossibly small and growing beyond expectation — ‘which indeed is the least of all seeds’ (Matthew 13:32).
