Grain

Description

Rye appears just twice in the King James Version — spared, along with wheat, from Egypt’s plague of hail because both crops were still too young to be beaten down, and later named by Isaiah among the grains a farmer sows in their proper place. Most translators today think the Hebrew word actually describes spelt, an ancient wheat relative, rather than the rye grown in northern climates.

Key verses

  • “But the wheat and the rie were not smitten: for they were not grown up.”

    Exodus 9:32

Fun fact

Modern rye is a cold-climate crop rarely grown in the ancient Near East, which is why most scholars now render this Hebrew word as ‘spelt’ instead.
