Grain

Description

In the King James Version, ‘corn’ never means the New World maize we picture today — it is the general word for grain, usually wheat or barley. Joseph stored it by the ton in Egypt, and Jesus’ disciples once plucked ears of it by hand as they walked through a field on the Sabbath.

Key verses

  • “And Joseph gathered corn as the sand of the sea, very much, until he left numbering; for it was without number.”

    Genesis 41:49

  • “At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat.”

    Matthew 12:1

Fun fact

Maize (modern ‘corn’) is native to the Americas and was unknown in the biblical world — the KJV’s ‘corn’ simply means grain.
