Would you eat it?

Mentioned in 11 verses (KJV)

Bird

Description

Ravens were scavengers, unclean under the law and unwelcome at any table, which makes it all the more striking that God chose exactly this bird to keep his prophet Elijah alive. Twice a day, ravens carried bread and meat to a man hiding by a brook.

Key verses

  • “Every raven after his kind;”

    Leviticus 11:15

  • “And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.”

    1 Kings 17:4

Fun fact

The very bird Leviticus lists as unclean to eat is the one God commanded to deliver Elijah’s food at the brook Cherith (1 Kings 17:4).
