Description
The dove Noah released from the ark returned the second time with an olive leaf, the first sign that the floodwaters were finally receding. Too poor for a lamb, a family could bring two doves or young pigeons instead for the offering after childbirth.
Key verses
“And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf pluckt off: so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth.”
Genesis 8:11
“And if she be not able to bring a lamb, then she shall bring two turtles, or two young pigeons; the one for the burnt offering, and the other for a sin offering: and the priest shall make an atonement for her, and she shall be clean.”
Leviticus 12:8
Symbolism
Peace after judgment, and later, the visible descent of the Holy Spirit at Jesus’ baptism — ‘he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove’ (Matthew 3:16).
