Mouse

The mouse was grouped among the ‘creeping things’ that were unclean to eat under the law, alongside the weasel and the tortoise. Isaiah later uses eating mice as shorthand for the most extreme, defiant kind of ritual apostasy.

• “These also shall be unclean unto you among the creeping things that creep upon the earth; the weasel, and the mouse, and the tortoise after his kind,”

  Leviticus 11:29

• “They that sanctify themselves, and purify themselves in the gardens behind one tree in the midst, eating swine’s flesh, and the abomination, and the mouse, shall be consumed together, saith the LORD.”
