Deer (hart & hind)
Parts the hoof and chews the cud (Lev 11:3)
Would you eat it?
Mentioned in 20 verses (KJV)
Description
Deer — the hart and hind of the King James Version — were wild game rather than livestock, clean to eat but caught by hunting rather than herding. Their grace and their thirst for water became one of Scripture’s most familiar pictures of longing for God.
Key verses
“The hart, and the roebuck, and the fallow deer, and the wild goat, and the pygarg, and the wild ox, and the chamois.”
Deuteronomy 14:5
“Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison;”
Genesis 27:3
Symbolism
The soul’s thirst for God — ‘as the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God’ (Psalms 42:1).
